I wanted to answer some of your questions you had lately.
What exactly is a crowder pea?
Click here> Crowder Peas for information on the crowder and cow peas from southeast U.S.A.
Do you shuck those yourself or take them somewhere?
Here is my shucker/pea sheller: Farm Man-plus I am also a full time pea sheller lately too.
Have you ever just put your shelled peas in a pillowcase?
No, but I have read about putting peas in a pillowcase and freezing them. I have used gallon freezer bags this time. I lost count but think I have around 12 gallons froze so far.
How do you keep the insects out of the garden without using pesticides?
Guineas. They check the garden every morning and every evening for bugs. They do have a tendency to peck any and all tomatoes though. I am happy to say though, the peas and corn had very few insects on and in them this year.
Do you plan on using the water wheel for generating power?
We have plans on using a generator that farm man bartered for, to generate electricity some day.
Is Jack a gelding?
Yes, Jack was "fixed" before he came to live here on the farm.
Have you ever thought of getting Jack a Ginny(girl donkey) so he wouldn't be so in love with Belle?
We did get another donkey but Jack was a little mean to her. She went to live at another farm. Jack only has eyes for Belle.
What kind of cow is Belle?
Belle is a Jersey Cow. Jerseys are excellent milk producers.
Do you milk Belle or Bessie?
No. Belle and Bessie are still nursing their calves, Luke and Buckeye. Maybe later.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask away.
I am off to the garden now. Can you believe I still have more peas, green beans, corn, tomatoes and other vegetables to pick, freeze and can?
I hope you all have a great day!

I see you are busy as ever. Have a great week.
Wow... that's a fancy shellin' machine you got there! :)
We have chicken wire around our garden this year, but there are still very few bugs in our garden, so I guess the chickens are keeping everything under control.
And I love Jerseys... they have such a clean look to them!
Thanks for answering! I can't believe you shell those yourself! Wow! Impressive!
Hi pam, good to see you posting again..did you get better Internet service? How is your mom doing?
I was wondering the same thing about Jack. I've heard that ungelded donkeys can be very difficult to keep as pets.
I missed the pea-in-the-pillowcase part...why would anyone want to do that? :-)
Your garden looks great with those guineas wandering through - they look serious about doing their work! lol
Very interesting! Making your own electricity would be very cool. There was a TV show on over here where they did that exact thing, with a water wheel too.
Congrats on winning the Entrecard contest!
Thank you Pam, now I know what crowder peas are. Still haven't seen them here though.
I couldn't help but laugh at Jack's antics, as said to me many times...You can't argue taste and Jack's taste is obviously Belle.
Where do you find one of those pea shelling/farm-man type of things? :-)
Crowder peas are absolutely the best followed close behind by pink eyed purple hulls. We use to have a dairy barn with jerseys. Have you ever made homemade ice cream with jersey milk? Its wonderful and totally full of calories- haha.
I think you are going to be busy for a while putting all those vegetables up.
Have a great day. I love simple but productive life you live in.
Very fun post. I enjoyed all the stories-behind-your-answers. Have you thought of writing children's books? The donkey-cow love story could be a cute one.
Now I know what crowder peas are. Can you believe there are so many of us that didn't have a clue?
I wish we had guineas and chickens.....
wow i would love to have a little farm altho i would go broke
For one i could never get rid of anything 2 i could never kill anything for eating and 3 i have no green thumb
What a nice blog . You most be very busy with such a lovely farm. The animals are adorable. The corn looks so delicious. Best wishes and keep up with the great post.
Your cows are so beautiful. What are you going to do with the babies? I'm seriously considering a jersey after we move.
I was just searching for crowder peas from past one weekend I get it here, thanks for this post.
