The Last Pod of Okra

Good Morning,

I cut the last of the (click here>)Okra this week.

I fried part of it.
Fried Okra:
Slice okra. Soak in a bowl of milk. Put about 1/2 cup of cornmeal and 1/4 cup of flour in a Ziploc bag. Add drained okra slices and shake. Have about 2 inches of hot vegetable oil in skillet. Put breaded okra in and let brown good before turning to brown on other side.
I also add some sliced onions as the okra browns. Don't over brown.

I pickled part of it (just like pickling cucmumbers)

and I used some of it in vegetable soup.

I will miss fresh (more info>)okra from the garden. That is... until next spring!

Have a great day.

Hi Pam, that was interesting,Okra is a very new vegetable here, I have never seen it growing but have seen it in some seed books. It looks a good one to try, you have used it in so many ways.
Have a good day

OKRA! Having been raised in TX with family in OK, I'm a big okra fan. We just get a bit of it up here in TN as our growing season isn't as long as yours. Nothing beats it fried--except maybe some small pods boiled with tomatoes fresh from the garden!

Mmmm! I Looove me some fried okra (okree, as we'd say down here). :)

Every time I think of okra, I think of this funny thing Jerry Clower used to say about boiled okra. If you've ever had boiled okra, you know how slick and slimy it gets.

Anyway, he'd say, "I et so much boiled okra when I was a boy, I never could keep my socks up!"

Have a wonderful day! - Leia (TennZen)

That soup looks wonderful. I may just have to cook up a pot of that today.

I love fried okra, but it's about the only way I've ever had okra so I don't know if I'd like it any other way yet :-)

Best,
Marie

Mr. C just made vegetable soup last night! (With our homegrown potatoes and carrots. and a couple of store bought stuff!)

We didn't get to eat any of our okra this year, so I'm definitely drooling over yorus!

It all looks good-but especially the soup. That soup some cornbread and a glass of milk would be a true feast!

What does okra taste like? I have heard of it from elsewhere but am curious as to what it might be similar to here in Australia.

Okra flowers are so pretty! I've just learned to like fried okra in the past few years. Growing up we called it okrey.

I LOVE okra. We grew it two summers ago and it is so pretty during bloom time. The tiny pods are most tender and delicious.... I'm going to ask if we can plant it again!

For those who don't know, okra has to be picked almost every day or it gets too tough. It grows very fast so be sure to harvest it when it's young and tender.

I'm not a fan of okra, except in gumbo or mixed in some kind of sauce with veggies and meat.

I find the okra doesn't have much flavor.

Your jars look so pretty.
Do you ever find yourself going into your pantry just to gaze at all of your pretty canned goods you've done?
