If you have inside pets like Lionel I know you understand how they can leave their mark on your flooring. As sweet as Lionel is he can be destructive.
Lionel loves to use the carpet around the stairs as his scratching post. I just hate tattling on him but he also loves to run across the hardwood floor in the kitchen and stop fast leaving little scratch marks on the floor.
My Mother has laminated flooring in her kitchen and living room. Laminated gives the look of wood, is durable and long lasting. It is not as expensive as hardwood flooring and easy to keep clean. She has a cordless sweeper that easily can pick up dust, dirt and dog hair off the laminate floors.
Mama also has a little fox terrier dog name Poochie who is such wonderful company for her.
You can see Poochie laying in the back on the laminate flooring.
My Mother's laminate flooring has held up better than hardwood floors would, I believe, with little Poochie running all around with his sharp claws. Someone does come and cut Poochie's claws and that does help with him scratching and sliding on the flooring.
Having a pet's claws trimmed helps prevent snags on the carpet too.
It is important to keep the pet hair vacuumed up regularly especially if you have children or grandchildren so they won't be breathing the pet dandruff and hair and if you have a breathing ailment like asthma.
We are planning on putting hardwood flooring in the downstairs soon but are undecided about the upstairs bedrooms, which all have carpet right now.
Living in the country, carpeting gets dirty and dusty fast.
I have been checking out different carpet stores on line.
One site I have noticed is Empire Today Carpet. They have free in home estimates and bring samples for you to look at. They also offer next day installation.
I also read some of the Empire Carpet Stories where real customers tell their experience with Empire Today. Previous customer satisfaction is important to me.
One carpet I noticed on the Empire Today site that looks like an excellent choice for pet owners is the Berber Carpet.
Some of the features of the Berber carpet are: Tight loop construction offers extra durability
Available in a range of tones and texture variations
Conceals footprints and vacuum marks.
Berber Carpet sounds just right for those high traffic areas and homes with pets.
Making the right flooring decisions will leave you and your pets (like Lionel) happy.
Have a great day.

We had Berber carpet in our other house before moving here. It was fantastic! We had 2 cats and the iguana running free on it and it held up well. We also lived in a red clay area and the carpet kept the dirt at the top for easy cleaning. Spills beaded up on top of the carpet for easy cleanup too. I think you made a wise choice
The furminator gets good reviews on Amazon. It's a brush that will fetch out all the underhair from your dogs/cats coat.
Not that you asked for an opnion, but here it is anyway :) ...Go for the actual hardwood. We put pre-finished Bruce hardwood floors in our kitchen, dining, living and sunroom almost ten years and have not regretted it once. We also have three cats in the house so it has gotten scratched up a bit and a few dings from dropping things but for me that just adds to the character. We have some friends who have the laminate and they like it, but there is just something about the feel and sound of real hardwood. The only downfall I've found so far is in front of the full glass door in the sunroom, it has faded a bit.
Good luck with your decision and have fun with it.
Lol it's ok Lionel, Aunty Jo will save you. I know what you mean though Pam, Felix likes to do the same to my computer chair, hmm and he licks my blanket. But life is just a barrel of laughs and I wouldn't change it. I have a lino/slate and carpets on my floors, carpet is def a pain to keep clean with kids around like I have. Hope you having a great weekend :)
Lionel is so adorable!
I love berber carpet, too, and had considered using it, but we decided not to choose berber weave when a friend of ours, with 3 cats who also liked to use carpet as scratching posts, dug their claws in and snagged the berber.
They had several areas that unraveled in long threads from being snagged by their cats' claws.
Berber is a different than typical cut-pile, plush type carpet with the carpet ends sticking up. Berber has tightly weaved loops instead.
With Berber carpet, a cat or dog can get its claws stuck in the loops of fabric that make up the Berber carpet and the edge of Berber carpet can unravel. Even pulling furniture or other sharp or pointy objects across it can cause snags to happen.
If you pull on a loose strand, it will continue to pull until the carpet is completely unwoven.
Several people have also confided to me that Berber very difficult to keep clean.
It tends to draw dirt to the bottom of the fibers and traps it there and because of the tight loop weave. And because of the twist of the loop being larger at the top than the bottom, it's very difficult to extract with a vacuum cleaner or a even a professional wet extractor including truck mounted equipment.
Here's a picture of what the unraveling typically looks like and how one person tried to repair it with glue:

Good luck with your floor covering shopping :)

No inside cats here and we just had bottle baby goats in our house from time to time though and we have proof on our silk plants, LOL!
Hi Pam,
I have some berber carpet.
Some of it does snag, but I think it depends on what kind you get.
I have not had trouble with mine snagging yet.

We have berber in the great room and the bedrooms. It is 9 years old and in great shape. However, puppies with their minds set on it, can pull at the edges and make it ravel. As for normal wear n tear, it holds up very well. since we have 9 dogs now, they are all confined to the family room and they are very happy with that. The rest of the house is happier, too.
Love the Animal stories. I also have a dog and two cats inside. Also love the picture of Mom.
I add you to my list of blogs that I visit.
We have laminate floor here and love it. The new house has hard wood floors throughout and we are dreading dealing with it all the time. The laminate is so easy!
We got a berber carpet from Empire and are pleased with it. I like those laminated floors though! That sounds like a good idea if you have pets!
We rent our little farmhouse, so we ended up getting my cat de-clawed. I felt horrible about it, but she still likes to go outside, and she still bats her paw at the dog, so I don't think she's too mad at me.
Hardwood floors will look great. And I've heard good things about berber carpet- which is good b/c I think I remember it being fairly expensive!
We have berber and find that the least expected things snag it and start pulling it. As for Empire, we had them come out. Fast and convenient, but more expensive than the local stores. We are now looking at vinyl planks for the kitchen. It will take us a year to decide and then a few more to afford it!
