One Thing after Another

This past week has certainly been a week of ups and downs.
First. Little Annie had 2 cute little babies. Then one almost died. But Miracle Eve is doing very good. Then I put her back with her Mama goat. But Little Annie won't let Miracle Eve nurse. So she is still on her bottle for now.

Second. We took the eggs down and put in the hatching tray. Then we didn't hear any cheeping. But we had 2 hatch yesterday. Then we only had 2 more hatch this morning. So far only 4 have hatch. But I hear more cheeping. Plus it won't be 21 days until 5 P.M. today. So we may still have a good hatch.

Third. I noticed Betsy didn't come up with Jack and the cows yesterday evening. We went to look for her and found her laying by the center fence. Her milk bag was swollen and one teat was hard and cold. She had mastitis. An infection of the teat.
FarmMan took this straw like device and inserted in the teat to start draining the infection. Then milked out what he could. Then he gave her a shot of antibiotics in the infected section of the teat. Then a shot of penicillin in a muscle.
We were up late last night checking on her and trying to get her up to go in the barn. It rain on and off all night and this morning. Betsy wouldn't get up.
This morning she had moved down hill to the small pond and we tell she had been drinking water.

She still looks sick. FarmMan gave her another shot this morning. Hopefully it will start taking effect soon.

Fourth. I was thinking how good apartment living might be right about now. With a goldfish for my only pet.

Fifth. I found my bottle of Geritol.

Sixth. I have a new burst of energy. Now..time for Miracle Eve's bottle, time to turn the next set of eggs, time to check for new biddies.
Then maybe a walk down to the water wheel and pond will be just what I need.

Keep your fingers crossed for more biddies to hatch.
Have a great day.

There are days that I dream of a townhouse in the city too... Where I could walk or ride my bike to where ever I needed to go and grow tomatos in a pot on the patio. But at the end of the day, I wouldn't trade my life for anything.

Sure hope Betsy is going to be OK. I know it is hard to take care of a sick animal... and right now you have your hands full!

Best of luck on all fronts.

Sorry to hear that Betsy isn't "feeling" well. I hope she recovers soon. Good luck with the "hatching"

I has mastitis once, and I can fully understand how bad poor Betsy is feeling. Poor baby.

Good luck with the hatching... and try to get out for a walk when you can. From the sounds of it, you need a bit of a breather!

I'm new to your blog- but have a not-so-secret love of cows and farm-life. I look forward to living vicariously through your blog! I hope Betsy gets better soon!

Never a dull moment, eh, Pam?
Forget about that goldfish-dream. Ain't gonna happen. You'd be so bored and unhappy living in an apartment.

Yep. All you need is some time of peace and calm down by the water wheel, and you'll be good as new. Oh and some Geritol. lol...

Give sweet Betsy a scratch and pat from me. Sending healing energy for her.

I lived the country life for about 5 years... then back to the city (divorced). I miss my two dozen cats following me down the lane to the mailbox. I miss the goats and the chickens too. What I wouldn't give to hear a rooster crow again! I miss it and I didn't even have a pond and a water wheel to refresh me! Enjoy!

Whew! So many things to do, so many minds to connect with! How blessed (and exhausting!) that sounds to our quiet, siloed life.

Can I rub your head for some energy? Or maybe we should all be taking Geritol; I never knew it was such an elixir!

Looking forward to hearing more about those biddies, Betsy, Eve. . . Pam. . . :)

Pam,
My goodness, you are sure busier than you usually are!!
So, do you think Annie will let Eve nurse again or is she going to be your bottle baby?
I think that is so awesome that you can here the eggs cheeping....I have never experienced that.
Poor Betsy, I bet that mastitis is very painful....I hope she gets better real soon!!
Take care, Tracey

Cheaping eggs, how cool! We have hens, but no rooster, so haven't had little chicks... ours were too cute when we first got them, though.
Poor Betsy, she doesn't look happy. I hope she feels better soon.

I always dream of living in a farm house. I love the simplicity of it.

Glad Eve is doing better, but you still have the feedings. Now you have to worry about Betsy. Animals are just like children, they always need your care. Love your land. City living isn't always that great, sometimes I long to be back in the country.

I appreciate your comments this weekend so much.
Living a rural life does have it's bumps in the road. But I really wouldn't trade it.
I am going to slow down some now so I'll be around to visit you all this week.
Have a great day.
