The Story Behind the Picture

What are you!? Some millionaire that inherited a big place?

That comment immediately brought this vivid image into my thoughts.
Our first home.

That was a comment I received once when I had posted this picture of the farm house after FarmMan had remodeled it.
Read more on the remodel here> Farm House Before and After

The little rough(well alright really rough looking)trailer looked like this in a year. The most beautiful home my 20 year old eyes had saw.

That was over 30 years ago and the road to here sure hasn't been a smooth one by any means, but it has been an adventure.
We haven't inherited any land or house. We got it the old fashion way. Through hard work and being very tight with what money we had.

You can read more about it here if you like> The Beginning

We saved and build our homes without borrowing money.(That's a younger FarmMan up there)

The early years were hard. Very hard. Saving and working. With 2 small boys. Buying building materials instead of new automobiles, instead of fancy name brand clothes. Driving older used cars, shopping at the salvation army and thrift stores. Sticking to a tight food budget.

In less than 7 years (7 long years)we were out of the trailer and in our first home we build. Together.

and it was paid for plus we paid off the 7 acres of land by then also. We were so proud.

Four years later we had sold the first house and land and bought 50 acres of land.
and was back in a trailer( that is a slimmer, younger FarmMan up there)

While we built this house. Together.

Then we decided it would be more practical to have less house and more land. So we once again we sold our home, bought 100 acres and built this house. Together.

Which turned into this house after a few years.

So after 30 years here we are. Still haven't inherited anything. We didn't have any hand outs. We paid as we went. Still paying as we go. It wasn't and still isn't any easier. I still shop thrift stores. We still haven't bought new cars, trucks, or tractors.

I wouldn't trade the bumpy ride to here for anything!
It has been quite the adventure.

The commenter did comment again later after she saw the post I had written about where we started from. She apologized. Thank-you.

It is hard doing things your way. Hard to listen to relatives comment about how poor you look, about your old car, as you struggle along working and saving.

We did it our way . It isn't the way for a lot of folks.

I can't wait for the next adventure!

Have a great day.

You should be very proud. I AM surprised that the current farm house isn't old. It looks like an old plantation--what a wonderful job you and your Farm Man did. Amazing.

Smiles,
Lisa

There is no better way! I thought you had restored that farm house. Didn't realize you built it! I hope to earn my home the way that you have. By working for it!

I say, Congratulations on your success!

I wish you and FarmMan would educate politicians about the benefits of being conservative with money. You don't have to have bailouts and you don't have to tax citizens into poverty.

Wow!! I know what you mean about people saying that we should move, get a bigger house, etc. We bought, we stayed, it's ours and we still like it. Antique Rose
Your place looks wonderful!!

Hard work.... how true. My Hubby came from a childhood of 5 children, an outhouse, living with the grandparents, reading for entertainment.... they had very very little. We now have a 3200 sq ft. house, 2 cars paid for, and a bit over 3 acres of land. We don't live on credit... pay as we go, something more people should learn to do.

Kudos to you and Farm Man for doing it the RIGHT way.

Well, that was rude. Doesn't matter how you came to what you have unless you care to share.
*sigh*
Jealousy I suppose.
You should be proud of what you have achieved.

What a wonderful legacy that you and FarmMan share!Life is a journey. So many people try to take shortcuts to get to the "good life". The truth is that the "good life" is even better when you put in the hard work to get there! Congratulations to both of you for having achieved the Good Life!

What a wonderful story! We are doing the samething! We bought our property, worked very hard and paid it off. We now live in a trailer on that property and are building our house in the backyard! :) Hubby owns 2 sawmills (which we have worked very hard for) we are cutting our own timber on the property and building our house. Things do get tight but it is a great life!

I went back one day and read the 10 or 11 posts about your home and how you got to where you are now....and I was just amazed! Absolutely AMAZED! You have been so blessed! It is an amazing story. You are so lucky to have a husband that can build anything and do anything...and WANTS to do anything! LOL!

I'm dropping by to say hello before we leave for the Ozarks. You and Farm Man are two of the hardest working people I know and you deserve all the things you have in your life and much more. It's people like you and Farm Man who keep our land open and productive who need to be applauded. How much easier to sell to developers than struggle on a farm but life wouldn't be the same. Off my soapbox now :-)

What a wonderful life you've had. It's been hard, but you've done it together and you appreciate it more when you've worked for it.

You and Farm Man have worked so hard and should be very proud of what you've accomplished, Pam! And doing without fancy things never really hurt anybody, did it? You have a beautiful debt-free house now because of the sacrifices you made.

You and Farm Man truly amaze me. You have so much to be proud of and more people should follow your example of buying only what you can afford. I think people appreciate things more if they work hard for it. Kudos to you both.

I think it's so awesome what y'all have done! It's amazing that you built all those homes yourself and without going into debt! All our cars are old too, and one or the other is broken down all the time.
